1. China
China remains the undisputed leader in the production of aluminum, a trend that has continued since the early 2000s. As of 2024, China’s aluminium output stands at around 37 million metric tons. Its dominance can be attributed to its vast bauxite reserves, coupled with the expanding industrial sector. The Chinese government has also invested heavily in aluminum production facilities, further pushing production rates.
2. India
Climbing to the second position in the global list, India produced approximately 3.7 million metric tons of aluminium in 2024. Both private and state-owned companies are instrumental to this surge in production. India’s notable companies include National Aluminium Company Limited and Hindalco, which are primarily responsible for the country’s output.
3. Russia
With an output of 3.6 million metric tons in 2024, Russia comes third on the list. One of the largest companies in Russia contributing to this figure is United Company RUSAL. What puts Russia in the front line of aluminum production is the rich deposit of raw materials and efficient, cost-effective electricity sources.
4. Canada
Canada’s place as the fourth-largest producer of aluminum comes from a total output of approximately 3 million metric tons in 2024. Quebec, being rich in bauxite, is responsible for the greater part of Canada’s aluminum production. The country also benefits from the operations of multinational aluminum companies like Alcoa and Rio Tinto Alcan.
5. Australia
Australia remains an influential country in aluminum production, with around 1.6 million metric tons in 2024. This production primarily originates from Western Australia, prominently fuelled by the activities of two mining giants, Alcoa and Rio Tinto Alcan.
6. United Arab Emirates
The Gulf nation is one of the highest aluminum-producing countries with an estimated 1.4 million metric tons in 2024. This is majorly due to companies like Emirates Global Aluminium, which contribute significantly to the overall production.
7. Bahrain
Bahrain holds the seventh position, generating approximately 1.3 million metric tons of aluminium in 2024. Alba, one of the largest aluminium producers in the world, plays a pivotal role in the country’s aluminium production journey.
8. Norway
Norway, with its cheap and plentiful hydroelectric power, remains an important player in the aluminium production industry. With an aluminum output around 1.2 million metric tons in 2024, it is the eighth largest nation in terms of production.
9. Brazil
With plentiful bauxite reserves, Brazil produced around 960,000 metric tons of aluminium in 2024. Leading companies like Alcoa, Novelis, and Hydro operate in this country, making it one of the top aluminium producers.
10. United States
Rounding out the top 10, the United States produced 890,000 metric tons of aluminium in 2024. The top-producing states are Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee and South Carolina. America’s production, however, is driven mainly by recycling rather than the processing of raw bauxite.
This list reflects the dynamic nature of aluminum production world overview. It’s also important to note that while these countries lead in production, the scene of aluminium consumption varies significantly. Some of these countries, such as China and India, also top the list of the world’s largest aluminum consumers due to their vast population and rapidly growing industries.
