FAA Greenlights Archer Aviation: Revolution in Electric Air Taxis on the Horizon!

Archer Aviation, a pioneering force in the urban air mobility sector, is clinching major milestones in quick succession as they seek to transform the future of transportation. The latest in their series of accomplishments is obtaining crucial clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA granted Archer Aviation what is known as a Special Airworthiness Certificate. This certificate is in the Experimental Category, enabling Archer to execute research and development flights. These R&D flights will gather a wide range of data on everything from the aircraft performance to its aerodynamics, which can be utilized to optimize the manufacturing process and the final product delivery.

Archer Aviation is one of the prominent players in the burgeoning air taxi sector, leading the charge to potentially reshape urban transportation. Their electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL), nicknamed Maker, is a symbol of technological innovation. An eco-friendly transportation option, it seeks to reduce air and noise pollution while improving urban mobility. With a flight range of up to 60 miles, the Maker can hit speeds of 150mph, all on electric power.

The Maker aircraft features a fixed-wing design, giving it a more plane-like appearance rather than a helicopter one that is more common in the eVTOL aircraft industry. A total of 12 rotors and six propellers propel the Maker, allowing it to take off and land vertically in tight urban spaces, while the forward thrust is facilitated by a ‘pusher prop’ at the rear.

Receiving the FAA special certificate is a significant milestone for Archer as it brings the company closer to its goal of launching a commercial air taxi service by 2024. The certificate will permit the company to further advance the development of its eVTOL prototype, with the opportunity to test its theory and computations in real-life scenarios.

Obtaining FAA certification, however, is just one step towards Archer’s ultimate goal of creating an extensive air taxi network. The company will need to pass rigorous testing and safety procedures before its aircraft can ferry passengers commercially. Stringent regulations set by FAA for passenger safety ensure only thoroughly tested and deemed safe technologies are approved for use.

A factor that might offer Archer a competitive edge is its partnership with United Airlines. Announced in 2021, the collaboration involves United ordering up to $1 billion of Archer’s eVTOL aircraft, potentially carrying United customers to airports within key cities. The deal also includes an option for United to buy an additional $500 million worth of aircraft.

Despite the challenges, Archer’s recent FAA sign-off bolsters the company’s position in the fiercely competitive market while reaffirming its commitment to emerging as a leader in the eVTOL industry. This progress undoubtedly brings the prospect of flying taxis closer to becoming a reality.
